In Australia - you may have seen a garbage truck driving down the street - and lifting wheelie bins with a robotic arm - it almost seems like a giant robot from a science fiction movie.
These type of garbage and recycling trucks are called side load trucks - and are extra efficient for municipal or council collections - where wheelie bins are positioned at the side of a road.

Trucks of this nature are not very suitable for commercial services - where bin sizes can be different - with larger four wheeled bins. We covered rear lift trucks on a previous video whereby the bin is brought to the rear of the truck for emptying.

When people place uniform sized wheelie bins - on the road side - the efficiency gains from using a side loader truck are obvious.

Most trucks of this type are single operator - meaning the driver can drive the truck and empty the bins at the same time.

Side loaders are precisely what their name suggests. The hydraulic arm that lifts the waste container operates from the side. The arm varies in lifting capacity but can lift as much as 180kg on common systems. The arm can lift roughly 6 bins per minute.

The hydraulic arm varies in length depending on model - with the Bucher Sport for example using an arm of c. 4.5m - enabling reaching around cars or obstacles.

Side load trucks come with significant safety benefits - as drivers and operators avoid common back and repetitive strain injuries.

The more modern trucks also come with fully integrated camera systems which provide the operator with visible proximity notifications for pedestrians and obstacles around the machine
