ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Black Pumas are firmly rooted in African American tradition, with influences including Bobby Womack and Curtis Mayfield during the ‘70s. Hailing from Austin, a city famous for its psych-rock scene – thanks to the 13th Floor Elevators and, of course, Janis Joplin – the band broke out in 2019 with Black Pumas, an instant classic where rich organ arrangements are matched by Eric Burton’s warm vocals. The sound is polished, but no less rich. Beyond vintage soul, you also hear touches of gospel and rock, highlighted by a striking cover of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.”

Recorded onstage at the Zénith in Paris, the Texan band opens the set with “Fire,” an up-tempo track carried by splendid female backing vocals. Another standout moment, “Gemini Sun,” with its catchy keyboards, creates a vivid atmosphere. And the irresistible “More Than A Love Song” finds the Black Pumas' frontman stepping out toward the crowd, much to the delight of the front rows. With a strong unity of tone, thanks to careful production, the band still manages to spotlight some especially dynamic moments. One such example is “Mrs. Postman,” a melodic single from their latest album, the eloquent Chronicles Of A Diamond.
