RE-CODING THE COMATORIUM - by Nabuurs&VanDoorn

Описание: Exhibition preview at Kate Amsterdam part of the Nieuw en Meer artists in residency program fri 28 mar 2025. Works on show are the reproduction of a map on which the artists noted online information related to the line they walked between the residency and the location where Maria Nordman in 1982 installed her nomadic work “Tjoba”. They divided this line into forty points to which they walked and of which they then mapped each location using a legend Nabuurs&VanDoorn developed during their well known “Zwischenlandschaften” series. Being rooted in performance art the artists question the truth value of documentation. As performance artists you do not control the pictures taken from your actions and therefore the meaning of the images can’t be guaranteed. To express this they placed the mapped code beneath each photograph so the viewer immediately knows they do not see what they are looking at. The title of their soloshow comes from the Mars Volta record De-loused in the Comatorium (2003). Omar Rodriguez Lopez composer/ guitarist of the progressive rockband lived and worked on the the line the artists mapped and they took his Amsterdam sessions as their main point of view to look at Amsterdam. The Comatorium refers to the stage between life and death that the artists refer to Tjoba. The nomadic Maria Nordman work of which she told Nabuurs&VanDoorn when they interviewed her never claimed its position in art history. In a way the work is realized but was never officially declared death and therefor keeps lingering in the grey zone between the living and the death. The artists look at this work as a noble gesture that offers Tjoba a last salute.
