Chebucto Head Lighthouse and Trail, Duncan's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada
Chebucto Head Lighthouse was first lit in 1872 and continues to this day to guide ships from their journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Next to the lighthouse is the remains of a World War II era concrete fortification which was equipped with searchlights and naval guns. It functioned as a defense of Halifax Harbor from German U-Boats and surface raiders. A huge fog horn once automatically sounded when necessary, but went silent in February, 2021, with no current plans to fix it, but beware!
Chebucto Head forms the most easterly point on the peninsula and is used to define the southwestern limit of Halifax Harbour; historically known to the Mi'kmaq Nation as "Jipugtug", (anglicized as "Chebucto") meaning "the biggest harbour", or simply, "the big harbour".
Duncan's Cove is a small rural community on the Chebucto Peninsula in the Halifax Regional Municipality on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean on the Ketch Harbour Road, 19 kilometers from Halifax. The community is located beside Chebucto Head, the prominent coastal headland.
