“Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon” (JP: “Rune Factory -Shin Bokujou Monogatari-”) is the first entry of the Rune Factory series developed by Neverland Co. and published by Marvelous and launched on the Nintendo DS in 2006. Originally marketed as a spin-off of the Bokujou Monogatari series (known in the west as “Story of Seasons,” formerly known as “Harvest Moon” until 2013), the Rune Factory series has grown independently from the Bokujou Monogatari name beginning with its second installment, Rune Factory 2. Since then, the Rune Factory series has introduced a total of six titles as of 2019, to be seven with the anticipated release of “Rune Factory 5” for the Nintendo Switch in 2021

Rune Factory is a series of fantasy adventure role-playing video games that feature elements of farming, dungeons, romance, crafting, and more. In "Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon” (“Rune Factory 1”), the protagonist wanders into the quaint town of Kardia, located in the nature-loving Norad Kingdom, without his memory and identity. A drifting, turnip-loving girl named Mist offers a home and farm to the protagonist, convincing him that tending to the earth may help trigger some of his memories to return. As the protagonist explores nearby caves, strange machines inside the dungeons summon monsters to appear from a different world, steadily increasing in numbers and frequency. With suspicion that these events may be related to Kardia’s bordering neighbor, the Sechs Empire known for its cold and machine-based civilation, the protagonist delves into a mysterious fantasy adventure as he uncovers the truths behind the encroaching monsters and the land’s runes.
