I guess this is an example of how to fail horribly at this game. My first mistake was giving the Fragmentation Cannon a try, which turned out to be terrible. I also forgot the game only supports three weapon groups (Mercenaries in contrast supported five) which kinda messed me up early on. Thankfully as the post-mission cutscene shows, I wasn't the only incompetent boob in this mission.
Also not really sure what happened to the AI here -- everyone just sort of stopped shooting at some point. I don't think they ran out of ammo, and they still threw grenades every once in awhile, so who knows. Didn't stop me from getting my gear trashed by accidentally bumping into them though.
DEBRIEFING FOR THIS MISSION:
"Your quick thinking in the field saved your unit from certain death at the hands of the GRELs. Good work, Scott."
AWARDS: Ebon Grave (Coffin)
Gear AI Upgrades:
Speed Increase 2
Armor Bonus 1
Combat Priority Upgrade: C5
=====
Heavy Gear was one of the last titles to use the Mechwarrior 2 engine back in the day, which had been hybridized for all kinds of unique games including Battlezone and Interstate '76. The game went all-out with it's story-driven campaign, insane "Gear" customization, dynamic battle theaters (with changing battle lines), extensive multiplayer functions, and even cheesy live-action cutscenes!
Sadly the game had mixed popularity for it's time, but I consider it a cult classic and have been trying for a very long time to get it working again. Here's how I got it running:
Game patched to version 1.1 (I can't use version 1.2 because it just crashes the game, which is a shame as it improves the graphics considerably - if anybody knows a fix for this, PLEASE let me know!)
nGlide is used to provide Glide emulation so the game runs in 3dfx mode: http://www.zeus-software.com/download... -- Using this I can also seamlessly upscale the game from it's original painful 640x480 resolution to 1920x1080.
And that's it, the game "just works" in this configuration on my Windows 7 box with an AMD Radeon HD 7850. The 2d menus act weird sometimes and have graphical corruption, alt-tabbing out and back in fixes it.
Unfortunately I can't include debriefings because of the way I'm using to capture video - I use DXWnd to force the game to run in windowed mode for capturing the 2D menu screens and briefings, then I re-launch the game normally to capture the 3D mission footage (trying to launch with DXWnd hooked in just causes the 3D sim to crash). When the mission ends and I go back to the debriefing, nothing I've used will reliably capture the debriefing screen - and I can't get back there if I exit out and switch to windowed mode again. So I'm just transcribing the debriefings instead.
The game's timings are also a bit messed up so it drops out almost immediately when the mission finishes rather than letting whatever end dialogue is playing finish. Not much I can do at the moment unfortunately.
I'm also making sure to include all videos in-stream where relevant though, so you won't miss out on anything. Apologies for the blurriness - the original video content is VERY low-res and the moderate upscaling I'm doing to make it fit my mismatched video stream probably isn't helping. I'm also terrible at video encoding.
I hope someone gets enjoyment out of this - I don't see very many playthroughs of this game on Youtube which I'm assuming is because of the difficulty in getting the game working well.
