Luke 18:9-14 (part two) As Jesus was instructing His disciples, He addressed "some who trusted in themselves, as though they were righteous, and despised others" about the dangers of spiritual pride, traditions of men, and a "works" mentality relating to our salvation.
The self-righteous Pharisee prayed about himself "I fast twice a week, and I tithe of all that I earn" and it was correct for him to give a tenth of all his increase under the Old Covenant ordinances to the work of the priests at the Temple. However, Jesus was teaching that this man was not fasting or giving from a willing heart, but instead it was simply a religious activity and his attempt to earn God's blessing/favor/approval through his man-made religious works. Now for New Covenant disciples of Jesus, giving is freewill offerings of our time, talents, and treasure, not some set amount or predetermined designation.
Because of the finished work on the cross of Christ, we the saints are the Temple of the living God.
