Radtel RT-880 Airband RX with FlightAware ADS-B Tracking

Описание: Adding a decent antenna to your hand held radio can open up the world of radio communication and it doesn't have to be a big expense.

with that in mind today I decided to re utilize some old coax, mounts and a Multi band HF/VHF/UHF mobile antenna I had gathering cobwebs. The experiment was to improve the range of VHF/UHF, Airband and some of the HF bands with an outdoor antenna whilst using my little Radtel RT-880 hand held radio.

The video shows both radio reception and ADS-B aircraft tracking. It is pretty cool being able to see and hear the actual aircraft.

I use a raspberry pi running PiAware. This was kindly donated to me by Pat W0OKE and HRO Portland Oregon, I have been enjoying using it since it first arrived back in the days of lockdown.
How it works is cool - The aircraft signals are received with an antenna cut for 1090 MHz and decoded with a FlightAware dongle which feeds the received aircraft positions into the network via the Internet.

Having the visual and audio feed is good fun and you don't need a Ham license to enjoy this. Look up your nearest airport frequencies and see who's up there with ADS-B Tracking and a hand held radio such as a Radtel or something similar that works on AM mode.
