Not heard since 1684?
Pinchgut Opera has recently released Giovanni Legrenzi's GIUSTINO on Pinchgut on Demand – their on-demand video platform. It was such a lovely flashback to revisit this gem of Venetian Baroque Opera (premiered in 1683) and the extraordinary singing of Nicholas Tamagna, Madeleine Pierard, Lauren Lodge-Campbell, Jacob Lawrence and more.
This aria from ACT 3 was added in the 1684 Scarlatti revival in Naples – where the ghost of Vitaliano's Father (Ombra) appears and in a 'deus ex machina' moment reveals that the three men who are about to kill or plot against each other are actually long-lost brothers. It was a great aria in a sea of recitative. I loved singing it shrouded in that charcoal grey costume, the wiry and wintry sounds of the Orchestra of the Antipodes, and in the marvellous acoustic of City Recital Hall.
It's unclear whether the aria travelled over the proceeding seven years to Milan, Genoa, Brescia, Bologna and finally Rome in 1695 – where the libretto was opera was not heard again until 2007 when it was revived in Germany. This aria wasn't included in that 2007 performance, so perhaps it had not been sung since 1684? The mind boggles!
Giovanni Legrenzi's GIUSTINO is available on Pinchgut at Home (to rent or buy a full access pass) at the link below.
