Pronunciation is an important part of oral communicative competence. Early work drew a distinction between the critical concepts of accent and intelligibility. Accent refers to how well speech patterns align with a local, often native, variety of the target language, whereas intelligibility refers to how well speech is understood by the listener. Crucially, a noticeable accent, including a noticeable non-native accent, does not necessarily impede understanding.
Decades of applied pronunciation research have therefore situated intelligibility, as opposed to “nativelike” pronunciation, as a more ethical and attainable pedagogical goal. In this talk, Dr. Nagle discusses this body of work, synthesizing research on teaching techniques that have been shown to be effective for helping language learners improve their ability to process spoken language (recognize words efficiently and accurately) and produce it in an intelligible way.
