What is En Passant? | Chess Terms | ChessKid

Описание: The en passant capture is so weird and surprising that your friends will think you're cheating! But don't worry, what you will learn in this video is entirely legal.

Usually, pawns can only capture pieces that are directly and diagonally in front of them. But did you know that there is one specific occasion where your pawns can capture a piece that is beside it?

That kind of capture is called en passant, a French expression that means "in passing." It is the only time that a piece lands on a square different from the one that the captured piece was occupying. Pretty weird, right?

However, if you want to make that capture (and not be called a cheater), you need to know its exact rules. This video will teach you everything you need to know about this rule so you can surprise your less experienced friends while playing chess! Just make sure you keep this video handy to show it to them if they accuse you of cheating.

Do you want to learn even more about the en passant rule? Then check out this article on ChessKid that goes over it.
