Police clear Stockton city manager in fatal downtown pedestrian crash

Описание: Stockton police say a fatal downtown pedestrian crash involving City Manager Johnny Ford was a tragic accident with no criminal liability. Investigators released their findings Sunday, confirming Ford was driving his personal vehicle when he struck two men Thursday night at El Dorado Street and Poplar Street.

Police say the crash happened just before 7:20 p.m. when the two men, ages 66 and 68, were crossing outside of a crosswalk. The 68-year-old later died at a hospital, while the 66-year-old remains in critical condition in intensive care. Officers say Ford stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. No signs of impairment were observed, and a breathalyzer test found no alcohol.

According to police, the primary collision factor aligns with state law requiring pedestrians to yield to vehicles when crossing outside of a crosswalk. The intersection does not have a crosswalk. The crash site has since become a memorial, and some community members are calling for additional pedestrian safety measures, including crosswalks and lighting. The district attorney’s office was notified and responded to the scene. The city manager’s office has not released a statement.
