The topic of this video is: I Have Vision Insurance. What Does That Entitle Me To?
Here is some of what is discussed in this video:
Charlie: Here's a question that says, "I have vision coverage, but what does it entitle me to? How do I know what I'm covered for?"
Kathy: Your employer will choose the coverage along with the insurance company to decide what the employees have for their coverage. The most important thing you should do is know your coverage before you have any services. There's a couple ways to do that.
You can contact the insurance company and speak with a customer service representative and he/she be able to go over your entire plan coverage for you. They'll be able to tell you if you're covered for an exam and if you're covered for materials, because there are different types of plans.
There are exam-only plans, there are exam and materials -- materials being your lenses and frames or your contact lenses.
With a top-of-the-line insurance company you can also count on them having a website where you can go on as a member and find out what your coverage is, what the frequency of your benefits would be, if you have coverage for basic lenses, for contact lenses, if you have coverage for lens options on eye glasses, if you have any co-pays.
Charlie: So this is really determined by the company, not by the insurer.
Kathy: Right.
Charlie: The company decides at what level it wants to give the benefit to the employee and then the vision insurance company provides the services under the plan that has been selected by the company.
Kathy: Right. A top-of-the-line insurance company is going to have multiple choices for an employer to choose from; different levels or coverage, different frequencies of coverage, different co-pay levels. The employer and the insurance company are going to decide what type of coverage is best for the employer, it's really the decision of the employer, and then they pass that coverage along to the employees.
Charlie: Probably the easiest way, if I'm that employee, I can just go online to the site and find out what my coverage is before I go to the eye doctor.
Kathy: Before -- you always want to know that before you have any services so that there are no surprises.
Charlie: Yes, I don't like surprises.
