Gordon Parsons recorded the song "Suvla Bay" for his 1969 released album "Rhythm Of The Range" on the EMI Columbia Label (SOEX 9653). The song is credited as being written by "Jack Spade" though no one knows who he is and may not even exist. There is some suggestion it was actually written by UK singer/songwriters Elton Box, Desmond Cox and Lewis Ilda who used the name Jack Spade as a pseudonym. There is also much debate when the song was actually written, some say the song was sung in the trenches during WW1 though the song was only first copyrighted in the mid 1940's. Some experts claim the song's structure indicates it was more likely written later than WW1. The truth will never be known, the only sure thing is that the song has been recorded by numerours artists over the years and became popular in the UK. The song was also adapted as "Dunkirk Bay" in reference to WW2.
This album was the first 33rpm LP that Gordon Parsons released, having first recorded on 78 rpm records in Australia for the Regal Zonophone Label in 1946.The song was written by US country music singer/songwriter Jim Reeves and first recorded by him in March 1963.
