There is no sugar-coating of the human condition in this hymn, written in the mid-1700s by Joseph Hart. The solemnness and brutal honesty of the lyrics are well-matched by the minor key of the tune, 'Bryn Calfaria'.
Yet there is hope! This hymn beautifully expresses the gospel - our helpless state as sinners, and God's remedy. Those who are honest and of a contrite heart will understand and reach out to the only One who can help any of us - "None but Jesus"
"For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." Isaiah 57:15
(Contrite - regretful, remorseful, humbled by sins and failures, seeking after God)
Lyrics: Joseph Hart (1712 - 1768)
Tune: 'Bryn Calfaria' William Owen (1814 - 1893)
