Today marks the 25th death anniversary of Major Hoshiar Singh, who led his company to capture the enemy locality of Jarpal in the Shakargarh Sector during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. Despite being seriously wounded by enemy shelling, he refused to be evacuated and continued to motivate his men to repulse three counter-attacks by the enemy. He displayed unparalleled courage, leadership and devotion to duty in the face of the enemy and earned the Param Vir Chakra, the nation’s highest gallantry award. He retired as a Colonel in 1988 and breathed his last on 6 December 1998. We salute his sacrifice and pay our homage to this legend of the Indian Army.
