In 2012, the annual Honolulu Challenger pro circuit event was hosted at Kailua Racquet Club for the first time in its history. With the club's unique atmosphere, players, tournament staff, & spectators were treated to a electric yet intimate experience watching the state's highest quality tennis. A week before the main event began, a Wildcard singles tournament was held to determine one final spot in the spot main draw as well as positions available to play the qualifying draw. Despite this event not being the main show, the Wildcard tournament provided for some memorable matches with both local players as well as touring pros trying to make their way into the big dance!

From the time the Wildcard draw was released, one name caught everybody's eyes. That name was Dennis Lajola, one of the most decorated & talented players to come out of Hawaii in a long time! After his star-studded career as a Rainbow Warrior at the University of Hawaii (help the team win 3 conference championships in a row), Dennis set his sights on the pro tour, teaming up with tennis legend Michael Chang (as his then primary coach) & aiming to eventually contend for major title runs on the ATP World Tour. Dennis came into 2012 hungry to continue to show the islands what can be done on a tennis court as well as how far he has come as a player! He would blow through the field, making it all the way to the championship match of the Wildcard event. To earn that wildcard, he would have to go through then 18 year old Roberto Cid! Roberto, a touring pro on the ATP circuit, was starting to make his name known as he played his way through Futures & Challengers in the pros. The Honolulu Challenger qualified under that criteria so Roberto entered & automatically got seeded as the #2 player in the draw. He also worked his way through his half of the draw where he ultimately met the former UH Warrior. Considering that today, Roberto is currently ranked #221 in the world, it was a real treat to see him battle against Hawaii's premier tennis representative.
