The 2013 Middle East Conference titled '1001 Middle Eastern Voices' took place on the 21 and 22 November at UWC Atlantic College. An engaging group of speakers were in attendance and students from the college supported the sessions by producing a short film. It was a very successful Atlantic Diploma Period giving not only information but also inspiration for our second years who organised the event. Speakers attended who worked on environmental and art projects connecting Palestinian, Jordanian and Israeli young people and who have lecturered in universities talking about Sharia Law amongst other key subjects.
The Middle East Conference encompasses elements of the UWC mission including:
•Education
•Peace
•Sustainability
•International understanding
•Cross-border and cross-cultural solutions.
There were 12 different student-led workshops and a Middle Eastern market on campus. One of the highlights of the two days was the 'Talking to the Wall' performance bringing together the talents of an Israeli storyteller and an Irish songwriter in a concert that has brought hope and inspiration to audiences from Belfast to Jerusalem.
The performance and the conference provided new and refreshing perspectives not only on what divides people but more importantly, on what can bring them together.
