I recently took a road trip to Aylmer, Quebec, Canada and I have to say, it was one of the best trips I've ever taken. The town of Aylmer is located on the Ottawa River, just a short drive from downtown Ottawa Ontario Canada, and it offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and charm.
The town was first incorporated in 1847, named after Lord Aylmer, who was a governor general of British North America and a lieutenant governor of Lower Canada from 1830 to 1835. Aylmer was initially a small logging town located on the banks of the Ottawa River. Many of its historic buildings and landmarks still stand today. You can explore the historic Old Aylmer neighborhood, scroll on Rue Principale and along the waterfront, and visit the museum to admire the rich history of this charming town.
One of the important moments in Aylmer's history occurred in 1975, when the town merged with the neighboring communities of Hull and Gatineau to form the new city of Gatineau. Despite this merger, however, Aylmer has managed to maintain its unique character and charm, thanks in large part to the efforts of local residents who are committed to preserving the town's historic buildings and landmarks.
You can’t skip the visit to the Aylmer Marina when you are in the town. Located on the Ottawa River, the marina offers stunning views of the water and surrounding landscape. It is the perfect spot to take a leisurely stroll, watch the boats go by, and snap some photos of the beautiful fall foliage. There are also plenty of benches and picnic tables, so it is easy to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery.
Another must-visit spot in Aylmer is Symmes Inn Museum. The museum is housed in a historic building that dates back to the early 19th century, and it's been beautifully restored to its original grandeur. During the Halloween season, the museum is decorated with spooky decorations and offers a variety of themed activities and events. It was scary when I first entered the building seeing all the Halloween decorations. But I learned about Symmes and other local luminaries, such as Anishinabeg leader Tessouat and pioneering photojournalist Marjorie Davison once I got used to the surroundings. It's a fun and unique way to experience the history and culture of Aylmer.
Of course, one of the main draws of Aylmer in the fall is the beautiful foliage colors with the leaves turning brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold in the autumn months. Whether you're driving along the scenic roads, hiking through the nearby parks, or simply taking a walk through town, you're sure to be surrounded by stunning fall foliage.
Overall, my road trip to Aylmer, Quebec, was a fantastic experience. From the beautiful marina to the spooky museum to the stunning fall colors, there was something for everyone to enjoy. If you're looking for a fun and unique road trip destination this fall, I highly recommend making the trip to Aylmer.
