Hemangiosarcoma can happen along the spleen, liver, heart, kidney, brain or skin among other locations.
However 2/3s of Hemangiosarcoma cases will arise from the spleen.
We don’t currently know the cause and it can happen in ANY breed- the ones listed are just the most common.
.
Your pet may show no clinical signs until it’s an emergency situation.
SIGNS include:
🐾 Bloated abdomen
🐾 Muscle loss
🐾 lethargy, slowing down
🐾 pale gums
🐾 Collapse
🐾 Intermittent or sudden GI signs- not eating, vomiting, diarrhea.
So how can you catch it early?
🐾 I Am a huge advocate of yearly radiographs (X-rays) on dogs over the age of 6. This can often catch masses or enlargement of organs that would allow further investigation.
🐾 If you can do an abdominal ultrasound, that’s even better for screening.
🐾 There are a few companies who can detect certain cancer biomarkers for Hemangiosarcoma! And further investigation into this is happening. Some of my favorites are:
1. - urine sample collected at home
2. Nu Q cancer screening- blood test
3. Shine on study - Blood test only for AKC registered and specific breeds.
.
If detected early, the spleen can be removed before it ruptures. Early detection also decreases the risk of spread to other organs and can allow us to treat with other modalities to prevent spread (chemo).
