The poor labouring men sang by The singing tradition, acc by the Broken consort (Annie Crozier, bowed psaltery ; Trevor Crozier, pandora ; Vic Gammon, concertina).
The gipsy "Queen" Caroline Hughes of Dorset learned this song wich is apparently unique, about 1900. Il was collected from her in 1967 by Charles Parker and Ewan MacColl. Mrs Hughes' melody belongs to a vast-tunes family doubtless Irish in origine, of wich Nicky Tams is a familiar member.
Broken consort, le trio de Trevor formé avec son épouse Annie et Vic Gammon, a enregistré deux titres, en 1971, sur un album diligenté par l'université de Cambridge, The Painful Plough, Songs and ballads of the agricultural lavourer, publié par Impact. Dans We poor labouring men, ils accompagnent The singing tradition, ensemble vocal composé de Julie West, Martyn Briggs, Bob Lapworth, Mick Nash, Trevor est à la pandora, Annie au psaltérion et Vic au concertina.
