You're really sick, and you're trying to get your mind off of the inescapable pangs of what's ailing you. The reality of feeling at one hundred percent is low, you've accepted that, but you'd prefer it were simply tolerable. You're accepting that the illness won't leave, so you've begun bargaining with it, hoping that it will let you co-exist in your own body, rather than continue to overtake you and the shell you're trapped inside of. Mood swings ensue, you become very aware of the changes in your surroundings, and the volume of everything you've ever worked for slipping away gets louder and louder while few seem to notice. Eventually distractions, pop culture, memories, and the horrid, horrid present have all become one piercing dull ache with the thrum of a pulsating dream, drowning out any thoughts of hope. You give in because it's all the illness will allow, and fighting has only worn you down.
That's one way to look at Marc With a C's new album, Please Believe In Yourself, Alright?
In 2021, Marc With a C - a genderfluid musical creator located in Florida - began an accidental trilogy with the album Thanatophobia, an album conceived and produced after a misdiagnosed type of cancer would lead to a countless host of disorders, limitations, and memory loss.
Needlejuice Records distributed the visually-stunning physical version designed by Catharine Blackard, as well as an entire video album for the Thanatophobia universe. Please Believe In Yourself, Alright? exists in that same universe, but while Marc may have last declared that the circumstances wouldn't win without a fight, we open this part of the journey with Marc chipping away at things once potentially held dear in the pursuit of a way to "Feel Okay?". Much emphasis is given to houses, homes, and convincing yourself that you've even become a burden to people you respect, even those you've never met -- to the point that you're blocking everyone you know or have ever heard of on social media to not spread your misery.
Despite the description, PBIYA? can often be a surprisingly fun ride, with beautiful odes to loved ones ("I Would Build You a Home"), following your dreams of superglue and classroom items ("Facing The Globe"), rants about headlines ("Two Minutes Hate"), bullied people becoming bullies ("You Do You"), and the "I'm rubber, you're glue" outlook of the first single, "Fake and You Know It", which is accompanied by an animated video by a mysterious Hong Kong artist known only as Yojimboakira.
The first physical pressing is moreso "Marc's Prototype", unleashed in a rather 'no-frills' manner, resplendent in classic black vinyl glory. With well under 100 copies of the album available from Marc's Bandcamp site, further releases/editions are expected that will - much as with Thanatophobia - open the world contained in the album exponentially. Those can only happen with support of the prototype version, but believe this: Marc is willing to open up this album for an autopsy of sorts in ways that the Marc With a C act hasn't been known for. You'll want to stay tuned after you get your copy.
But we must stress: it's the middle of a trilogy. A trilogy with a name that has not yet been disclosed. The conclusion of said trilogy is also complete and ready for quick release, and while there are more familiar tones and sounds from past Marc With a C albums, PBIYA? uses each of its own formats against each other to represent attempts to speak out effectively as things fall apart, including yourself, your platform, and the ability to be heard.
Don't worry, the follow-up is MUCH more bleak!
Please Believe In Yourself, Alright? is officially available on all digital platforms on Friday, November 17th, 2023, with the pre-order for the limited physical vinyl copies beginning Tuesday, September 12th at marcwithac.bandcamp.com. Those who order physical copies directly from Marc's Bandcamp will be in a position to have heard the album long before those who hold out for the digital release. The way that Squiddy intended, of course.
