During the final phase of World War II, Dominikus Thomas, a member of Germany’s Volkssturm (the late-war militia), took part in the killing of an unarmed American airman after the airman had surrendered. Under the laws of war, harming a prisoner who has surrendered is a serious violation—and cases like this became a focus of Allied postwar justice.
After Germany’s defeat, Thomas was arrested and brought before a U.S. military tribunal in Heidelberg. He was convicted of war crimes and executed in 1946, part of a broader effort to prosecute unlawful killings and enforce accountability beyond regular army units.
This case highlights how the chaos of late-war Europe—and the involvement of civilian militias—often led to brutal crimes, and how postwar tribunals sought to establish clear legal responsibility for actions committed during the conflict.
