Описание: On a $60,000 salary, your top federal tax rate is 12%. But you pay about 8%.

Federal income tax is the second line on our example pay stub. In 2026, the standard deduction for a single filer is $16,100 (IRS), so the first $16,100 of pay isn't hit by federal income tax (Social Security and Medicare still apply). The rest climbs a staircase of brackets: 10% on the first $12,400 of taxable income, 12% up to $50,400, and 22% only above that (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

$60,000 − $16,100 = $43,900 of taxable income. 10% of $12,400 is $1,240, plus 12% of the next $31,500 is $3,780: $5,020 for the year, about 8.4% of your pay. Paid every two weeks, that's about $193.08 a paycheck, the same figure the IRS withholding tables (Publication 15-T) give for a standard W-4.

Part 2 of the series "Anatomy Of A US Paycheck". Every part is a complete 60-second film. Full playlist: "Pay Stub Explained: Anatomy Of A US Paycheck (60-Second Series)".

What is federal income tax withholding?
Federal income tax withholding is the part of each paycheck your employer sends to the IRS toward your yearly income tax, based on your W-4 and the IRS withholding tables. Tax brackets (marginal rates) apply only to the dollars inside each bracket, so your effective tax rate is lower than your top rate. This federal income tax explainer uses only official US sources. It doesn't recommend any tax product or service.

The myth: a raise into a higher bracket can't shrink your pay through your tax bracket. Only the dollars above the line pay the higher rate. Example: a $10,000 raise to $70,000 pushes $3,500 into the 22% bracket, adds about $1,550 of federal income tax, and you keep about $8,450 of the raise (federal income tax only).

Why this matters: knowing your tax bracket, your effective tax rate and how the standard deduction works lets you read the federal income tax line on your pay stub, check your W-4, and stop fearing a raise.

What's your top bracket? 10%, 12%, or 22%? Tell us in the comments 👇

• IRS — Publication 15-T (2026), Federal Income Tax Withholding Methods
• Math: $60,000 − $16,100 = $43,900; 10% × $12,400 + 12% × $31,500 = $5,020; ÷ 26 = $193.08 (example: single filer, no other income)
