Kirszenbaum is like a Wyspiański high on mephedrone. They breathe new life into the ashes of post-folk, chart fresh courses, and loop them with a Slavic stomp, crashing Tom Waits and Junip together. Imagine Zola yelling at klezmer musicians, Henry Miller dancing with the Moomins, resulting in a melancholic, intertextual carousel. Kierkegaard once described their music as "probably jazz," but nothing could be further from the truth. Musically, the project's eclectic style relies heavily on the close cooperation of guitars, post-rock violins, and live-recorded loops. This blend results in a contemporary and highly specific interpretation of Slavic, klezmer, and Anglo-Saxon folk, augmented by a dynamic vocal duo that alternates between whispering and shouting. An adept ear can catch influences from artists like Fink, Andrew Bird, Warren Ellis, the later works of Tom Waits, and the early works of Nick Cave. Meanwhile, a keen eye will notice playful nods to classic and less classic positions in silent movies, early science fiction cinema, among others. A proficient reader will recognize an intertextual juggling of literary references, ranging from Albert Camus and Franz Kafka, through Tove Jansson and Gombrowicz, to Terry Pratchett.
Kirszenbaum is a collaborative effort between Kacper Szpyrka (a philosopher, bookseller, and violinist who has recorded with HellHaven, Furda, and Morświn among others) and Jakub Wiśniewski (an English philologist, technical writer, and guitarist), whose prior collaboration in the band Pora Wiatru led to over 150 concerts, a finale performance in Must Be the Music, winning the main prize at the Polish edition of the Emergenza Festival, a series of crowd-funded concerts in trams, and a performance at Germany's Taubertal Festival. Before their debut album "Stypa komedianta" (Karrot Kommando, 2019), recorded in collaboration with the Radio Center for Folk Culture, Kirszenbaum self-published several single tracks and the EP "Golem XV," along with accompanying film collages.
Since 2017, they have been featured on various radio stations and have maintained an active concert schedule, opening for artists such as Fisz Emade Tworzywo, Fifidroki, Wadada, Żywiołak, Canadian Yamantaka//Sonic Titan, Pablopavo i Ludziki, and Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa. Both artists also engage in literary activities, with Szpyrka translating poetry, prose, and philosophical texts from English and Spanish, published in various magazines, and Wiśniewski's Polish and English prose and essays appearing in numerous publications. In 2022, Wiśniewski's novels "Myja" and "Robak" were published, with "Robak" winning the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature Award. Kirszenbaum has performed over 160 concerts across Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, and even a week-long tour in Japan, participating in numerous festivals and winning several awards.
Their second album, "Się" (Karrot Kommando, 2021), recorded by Andrzej Giegło (Pablopavo i Ludziki) and Robert Nastal (Nosowska), produced by the crew of Studio AS One and Mariusz Dziurawiec (Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa), featured special guest Marcin Świetlicki contributing poetically and vocally.
