Did the 2014 Ukraine Crisis START the Largest War in Europe Since WWII?
On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, beginning the largest interstate war in Europe since the Second World War.
But the path to war began years earlier.
In November 2013, protests erupted in Kyiv after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych suspended plans to sign an association agreement with the European Union. The demonstrations became known as the Euromaidan movement and led to months of political unrest across the country.
On 22 February 2014, Yanukovych left Kyiv following the collapse of his government. Within days, Russian forces moved into Crimea, a strategically important peninsula that hosts Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol.
A referendum was held in Crimea on 16 March 2014, and Russia formally annexed the territory on 18 March 2014, a move widely condemned by Western governments and followed by international sanctions.
Soon after, armed conflict began in eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, beginning the war in the Donbas.
Despite the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015, the conflict continued for years before escalating dramatically with Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion.
This documentary explains how the 2014 Ukraine crisis, the annexation of Crimea, and the war in Donbas escalated into the largest war in Europe since World War II.
