This morning I was planning on doing something a little longer, but since I was recovering form a stomach bug (maybe food poisoning - lasted a day), I decided to do a quicker trip and check out and area I have know about for a while. I've even had one or two of you suggest I visit this one. The destination was Fish Canyon Narrows in the Angeles National Forest! I went pretty early along Warm Springs Fish Canyon Truck Trail. The narrows were amazing, but it was very cold (low 30s F I think). Fortunately the Big Cienega Spring, was actually kind of warm (lukewarm). It was a nice spring to warm my hands up in, but I wouldn't call it hot (maybe 70s to low 80s F - definitely warm relative to how it was outside). I know that thermal springs exist in the greater area, but I was happy to find this one, being that it was warm enough to make my cold hand feel better. I went back through the narrows, which were great too. I also foraged some miner's lettuce and some of the bulbs from the Blue Dicks wildflowers (kind of like a wild onion). Afterwards, I went to Frenchman's Flats to check out Piru Creek. I don't normally go in the winter, but it was neat to see what the water looked like when the dam was discharging more than normal. I can see how someone could kayak Piru Creek now. It's much too high for crayfish now, but I'll likely return in the spring when the water's lower and when it's warmer outside (same for the Fish Canyon Narrows).
Also, there are quite a few springs called "Big Cienega Spring" or "Cienega Spring" on Google maps. This one is just before the Cienega Campground near Fish Canyon Narrows, which I also visited.
I know that there's some good stuff further beyond where I went. I will check those areas out on future trips.
