Here’s an updated summary of the Mira Mesa Community Park (Phase II) and Recreation Center renovation project in San Diego:
Project Background
The Mira Mesa Community Park Improvements Phase II covers approximately 17 acres of park space south of New Salem Street. The earlier Phase I (completed in 2018) included new baseball fields, a playground, parking and restrooms north of New Salem .
The idea dates back to 2005, and citizens had been advocating for redevelopment for decades. A forgotten $1 million community fund discovered amid delays reignited local involvement in 2024.
Phase II Scope & Features
Improvements planned include:
A new aquatic complex with a 14‑lane competition pool, separate activity pool, and splash pad
An all‑wheel plaza for skateboards, scooters, bikes and wheelchairs
Renovation of the existing recreation center (HVAC, structural repairs, exterior repaint)
Two new play areas for children (toddlers and ages 5–12)
Two outdoor multi‑use courts striped for basketball and pickleball
Expanded parking lot, ADA paths, sports lighting, landscaping, irrigation, public art, open grass areas and pathway improvements.
The total projected cost ranges from $43 million to $55 million, varying by source. Base construction cost was estimated around $35 million in late 2022, though bids came in at $41–43 million.
Construction is expected to finish summer 2026, though some reports indicate summer 2026 or later depending on added features and bids.
