So I did the best of my ability to revive this solo audio in honor of Randy since it is the 19th and has been 44 years since his passing. This show was quite an important show as it was originally meant to be co-headlined by Black Sabbath with dio and Motörhead. Black Sabbath ended up canceling cause of a recording commitment and so Ozz was brought to the bill as the replacing act with Motorhead headlining.
The festival (Heavy Metal Holocaust) took place August 1, 1981 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England In Vale Park Stadium.
The festival had a massive lineup with Motörhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Triumph, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Riot, and Vardis all playing. They drew in a crowd of about 40,000 people and the concert used quite a huge sound system rated at over 100,00 watts and was one of the largest ever used in an outdoor venue at the time.
Randy was on fire during this concert, wearing a bright red suit in place of his usual darker attire. You can find him wearing it in many famous pictures online. You can see him sporting it in the photo I used in this video, with a sign also in the background saying "Ozzy is God" echoing to how big they were getting at this point. This concert was a defining moment for Randy in his career, and it was one of last chances British fans got too see him before his passing in 1982.
There were many notable comments long after the show, one of the biggest examples being from guitarists Rik Emmett of Triumph stating that Ozz and them were “ the best band he has ever seen in his life.”
Footage of the concert being professionally shot had been speculated. I personally believe that the concert itself wasn’t, but that more fan recordings could exist elsewhere because of the two that exist on YouTube. I’m no expert on the subject though, if such a video does exist I hope for it to come to light one day. For now we have what we have and I think it’s our responsibility as fans to keep reviving and carrying on his legacy into the future with the audio, pictures, and videos we have currently of him.
Tragically on March 19th, 1982 Randy Rhoads would pass away at the age of 25 in a fatal plane crash that left everyone in grief and sadness. He may have left us far too earlier, but he'll never be forgotten within the communities of thousands of musician's and people. He left a legacy that'll be carried on for hundreds of years to come.
