A short play of Richard Garriott's Akalabeth: World of Doom, published for the Apple II in 1980 by California Pacific Computer Company.
Garriott initially sold around a dozen self-made copies to a ComputerLand store in Texas before it was picked up by Al Remmers of California Pacific, who went on to publish it in 1980.
Akalabeth, inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, and created while Garriott was attending high school, can be considered the precursor to his hugely successful Ultima series.
The later release by California Pacific would feature the famous demon-cover artwork by artist Denis Loubet.
Akalabeth was notoriously difficult. The magic amulet allowed for a few tricks, like teleporting to ladders, great when being attacked by Gremlins but it could also be used for the Lizard Man trick (spell abusing) which boosted your stats and helped you a bit in completing the task set by Lord British of destroying 10 increasingly challenging monsters.
I've sped up most of the traveling parts of the video.
