In an effort to help growers make hybrid selections that maximize return on investment, AgriGold is expanding its Field GX family of classifications with the addition of Field GX-J as the newest family within the company’s Field GX system.
According to National Agronomy Lead Whitney Monin, the GX-J classification offers eight different hybrids with their own set of characteristics designed to find the perfect seed for your soil.
“At AgriGold, we have a very unique system of how we identify and characterize our hybrids that we have from a corn perspective called Field GX,” Monin said. “We take genotyping and phenotyping information of what we know about our products and marry that with the best management recommendations for those products.”
Monin adds that knowing a hybrid’s genetic family helps simplify management, reduce risk, and maximize results in the field, ensuring producers choose a seed that best aligns with their management practices and growing conditions.
Producers can also spread out their seed choices and trait selection amongst the six different GX families – minimizing overall risk through diversification.
“It's very exciting for us because farmers today are really managing their crop on a micro level, not a macro level. We're looking at our fertility and our input decisions more critically,” Monin said. “The pencil is very sharp.”
Looking ahead to the 2023 growing season, Monin expects fertility will continue to be a primary focus, given the “interesting growing season” in 2022.
“We had the third hottest and the third driest season in terms of a meteorological summer ever on record. So, from a fertility management perspective, we actually had incredibly green plants that took up a lot of nutrients late, but maybe didn't capitalize on that in terms of grain and reserves,” Monin said.
While that potentially means more soil nutrients reserves than normal, the wetter- and warmer-than-normal winter could also lead to above-normal nutrient leaching and volatilization, depending on the nutrients.
“Moving into this season, unfortunately, I think growers are going to have to continue to manage at a very strict level, because we know input costs are high, and we know the stakes are high,” Monin added.
