A strong 977 mb low off the Pacific Northwest coast, combined with king tides, high surf (waves of 20-25 feet), and coastal flooding to produce dramatic scenes along the remote north coast of Washington state on Saturday, December 14th. Shots in this package include beach erosion and many logs adrift at Kalaloch Lodge in Olympic National Park, a flooded motel in Copalis Beach, huge waves viewed from a bluff in Grays Harbor County, and strong winds with large amounts of blowing sea foam in La Push. A team of Pacific Northwest weather chasers recorded a 64 mph gust on a professional vehicle-mounted anemometer in La Push. Coastal flooding impacts were widespread due to the combination of king tides, onshore winds, and low atmospheric pressure.
