Among Anioma communities, Ubulu-Uku (in Aniocha South LGA, Delta State) is the most historically recognized as the origin and heartland of Akwa Ocha weaving.
Why Ubulu-Uku?
Deep Weaving Tradition:
Oral history and cultural records point to Ubulu-Uku women as the earliest and most skilled weavers of Akwa Ocha.
Weaving is a hereditary craft there, passed down through generations.
Economic & Cultural Center:
For centuries, Ubulu-Uku weavers produced Akwa Ocha for royalty, titled men, and ceremonies across Anioma and beyond.
It became a key part of trade and cultural exchange.
Recognition:
Even today, Ubulu-Uku is still widely celebrated as the custodian of Anioma weaving culture, with many Anioma leaders acknowledging it as the cloth’s cradle.
Other Anioma towns like Issele-Uku, Ogwashi-Uku, Onicha-Ugbo, and Akwukwu-Igbo also practice weaving, but Ubulu-Uku is regarded as the origin and strongest root of Akwa Ocha.
