After 80 days and found worm balls everywhere, piles of food scraps, and more composting worms than I expected—so the big question was… do I harvest or keep feeding? 🪱😱
In this outdoor vermicomposting check-in, I dig into my worm bin to see how the worms are doing after nearly three months of hands-off composting. You’ll see massive clusters of red wigglers, worms swarming food scraps, and clear signs that this worm bin ecosystem is thriving.
Instead of harvesting vermicompost, I decide to keep the system growing by adding a mix of fast food and slow food scraps, along with plenty of natural bedding made from shredded leaves. This helps balance moisture, airflow, and carbon while keeping the worms active and happy. If you’re composting with worms outdoors, this is exactly what a healthy, mature bin should look like.
Whether you’re new to vermicomposting, running an outdoor worm bin, or trying to maximize worm population and castings, this real-world update shows what actually happens over time when you let worms do their thing.
