Spencer Bay has been part of my life for over 50 years. On this special day, I watched the historic Steamship Katahdin return to these waters — fifty years to the day since the last log drive she towed from Spencer Bay.
Moosehead Lake has always been shaped by working boats, wilderness, and the people who call it home. Built in 1914, the Katahdin once ferried people, livestock, and supplies to remote parts of the lake. Today, she remains a living piece of Maine’s maritime heritage.
This film documents a day on Spencer Bay, watching history still move across the water.
