Hello,
The first photo of the week is by a excellent young photographer called Connor McLaren, who is based up here in Scotland. Obviously a born romantic, Connor wanted to create a very special moment for Jaimie, his girlfriend. This picture took a great deal of planning - Connor had to wait until the Milky Way was visible in the northern hemisphere, and then had to wait for a moonless and cloudless night. The location is the praying hands in Glen Lyon. Shooting with a Canon 5D, and with a 16-35mm lens, his ISO was 8,000 and his shutter was open for 25 seconds. I think you will agree that all this planning was well worth it. And Of course, Jaimie said yes.

From the vast wideness of the universe to the art of macro photography. This work of art has been carved from a pencil and is called "Self Made Man" by artist Salavat Fidai. Graham Denholm, the photographer fortunately took his macro lens to capture this tiny artefact. Even so, it would have been a difficult task to get that shot just right.

This next picture is from the Furniture Fair in Milan. These events are often very difficult for photographers - they are not usually allowed to shoot what they want, or have access to all areas, and so pictures can sometimes look stinted and dull. However, here Laura Chiesa has shot a lovely picture by using the lines and shapes in the ceiling to focus on the couple in the middle of the frame. it becomes an eyecatching and intriguing photo.

This weeks photo by Moritz Frankenberg is very simple, yet eyecatching because of the astonished look of the deer. The shallow depth of field makes the deer stand out in the frame. This is a nice picture to have in a newspaper, because it works as a holding image - it is eyecatching and attracts the reader, and can be used to change the pace of the newspaper between topics or subjects. These are very useful.

And finally this great news picture by John Moore has just won the world press photo of the year award. I think the 90% of being a great news photographer is being in the right place at the right time and then the other 10% is the ability to see a picture and have the wherewithal to take the photo. This picture is of a young child crying as her mother is searched by a border patrol agent on the US/Mexico border. This is a classic news photo, shot as it happened in front of him, which captures a single moment in time that then highlights a much wider issue. This picture works because it focuses on the child - she is the only complete subject here. We only see part of the mother, agent and even the car. This makes the child the centre of our attention with the other components towering over over here. John certainly achieved his aim of humanising the complex issue of immigration. It’s no surprise that this picture appeared in newspapers and magazines around the world.
