SummerFest 2020: BUMS Brass Band - 'When I Grow Up' by Tim Minchin arr. Philip Harper

‘When I Grow Up’ is the 4th movement from arranger, and ex-Bristol University Music alumnus, Philip Harper’s 10-minute celebration of Roald Dahl, in his electrifying concert piece, ‘The World’s Greatest Storyteller’. The piece was used as the finale to the Cory Band’s 2016 Brass In Concert set, winning them the title that year, and is the feature piece on their CD from that year, entitled ‘Storytelling’. ‘When I Grow Up’ is probably the best-known song from the multi award-winning musical adaption of ‘Matilda’, music written by Australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin. Our rendition features a dazzling cornet solo by Principal Cornet Louis Appleyard. We hope you enjoy!

The University of Bristol Brass Band is an un-auditioned ensemble which is part of Bristol University Music Society. The band has around 35 players, many of whom are lucky enough to have played with some of the top bands in the country and the world, including Filton Concert Brass, City of Cardiff Band, Tredegar Town Band, The National Youth Brass Band of Wales, Youth Brass 2000 and the European Youth Brass Band. This year, the band came 2nd in the Shield Section of the UniBrass Competition and the Principle Trombone, Dominic Gardner, won The Best Soloist award.
