Beginner offroad trails ep.25: Hills of the Moon

Описание: The Hills of the Moon trail is a 6.2-mile out-and-back route located in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, in southern California. This trail takes travelers deep into the Borrego Badlands, offering a unique view of Fonts Point from below, unlike the typical view from above. The trail follows one of several washes that cut through the badlands, showcasing layered sandstone in hues ranging from light tan to rusty red, remnants from when the area was underwater.

The wash starts as a wide plain but quickly narrows into a winding canyon with steep sandstone walls. The trail can be followed until it becomes too narrow to continue, and the end point depends on the skills of the driver and the capability of the vehicle. We turn around before the trail gets intermediate level and hike onwards.

Travelers should be aware that all canyons and washes in the area are prone to flash floods, so it's important to monitor weather reports for the mountains to the west. There is no cell phone service within the canyon, and the nearest services are in Borrego Springs to the northwest and Salton City to the northeast. Off-road travel within the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is restricted to street-legal vehicles only.
