Carl Lewis would win the gold medal with his first jump of 8.67m, a new Championship Record. European Record Holder (8.86m) Robert Emmiyan of Soviet Armenia would take the silver with his fourth attempt of 8.53m. Third spot would ultimately go to Larry Myricks of the US with 8.33m, but the original result shows Giovanni Evangelisti of Italy taking bronze with 8.38m. According to the Wikipedia page, " Giovanni Evangelisti of Italy originally won the bronze medal with 8.38m, but it was later determined that Italian field officials had entered a pre-arranged fake result for a jump of 7.85m. While Evangelisti had no involvement in or knowledge of the fraud, Italian head coach Sandro Donati, who revealed it, was fired. Larry Myricks would receive the bronze medal nine months later."
