The river Emscher has been one of the most polluted rivers in Europe for decades. Due to a unique and outstanding project of renaturation, this river is now free from pollution and ready to be conquered by nature once again.
The ecological reconstruction of the Emscher system consists of the construction of a central wastewater treatment system in the Ruhr area, the construction of underground sewers and the renaturation of the Emscher and its tributaries. It began in 1992 and was completed at the end of 2021. The investment volume of the project is around 5.38 billion euros.
