Hey everyone! Ready to discover a place that’s shaping Africa’s future leaders? Today, we’re diving into the African Leadership Academy, or as we call it, ALA!
ALA is in Honeydew, Johannesburg, South Africa, founded in 2008 by Fred Swaniker and Chris Bradford. Their goal? To train 6,000 African leaders by 2035 to transform the continent! So far, about 1,869 students from 46 countries have studied there, with only a 4-5% acceptance rate out of 40,000 applicants!
Imagine studying with youth from across Africa, learning to solve issues like poverty or education. At ALA, it’s not just about books! The two-year program, for ages 16 to 19, follows the Cambridge A Levels system. You’ll pick 3-4 subjects like math or sciences, plus core courses in Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies, and Writing & Rhetoric. Think projects like bringing electricity to an African village!
It’s not all study—life at ALA is full of fun! There are House Competitions between six houses like Nile and Congo, where you play soccer or basketball. The Do Something Cool event each term lets you show off talents like painting or music. Plus, the Explore Johannesburg Program takes you on trips to see lions and elephants! And don’t miss Cultural Night, where you dance Zulu and eat Ghanaian food in one day!
It’s not just fun—there are events like the Model African Union, a 4-day conference simulating the African Union, and Seminal Readings, where you discuss big ideas like justice three times a year. Love poetry or acting? Arts Night is your stage, and The Bridge magazine showcases your creativity.
How do you apply? Head to www.africanleadershipacademy.org/apply and write essays about your leadership and passion. If you stand out, you’ll move to tests and an interview, with final acceptance in April. The cost is $30,900 per year, but ALA offers generous scholarships—about 90% of students get them!
ALA alumni are doing big things! Like Fatma Al-Ansari from Mali, the youngest diplomat who founded a peace network, or Eddie Oketch from Kenya, a senator who started a peace movement. 95% of graduates get scholarships to universities like Yale and MIT, and the Africa Careers Network connects you to 5,000 job opportunities!
If you dream of changing Africa, ALA is your starting point! Visit the website and apply now! Drop your questions in the comments, and don’t forget to like and subscribe! One small step today, and you’ll be an African leader tomorrow!
Peace out, everyone!
