Aircraft accidents, unexploded ordnance, and operational incidents continued to kill RAF personnel after Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945.
Pilots who had survived the entire war — five years of combat operations — died in accidents during the demobilization period, during ferry flights, or in training incidents in the weeks and months after victory.
Some of the longest-surviving RAF pilots of the war did not survive the peace.
Surviving the war was not the same as surviving the end of the war. For some, the gap between those two things was a week.
