Composed in 1911 for the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, this majestic motet sets the Latin text of Isaiah 40:6-11, famously known as the "voice of one crying in the wilderness" preparing the way for the Lord.
The work is celebrated for its vivid contrasts, moving from a declamatory, almost operatic opening to lush, eight-part textures that fill the resonant space of the cathedral. It concludes with a serene, pastoral section where a solo voice reflects on the image of Christ as the Good Shepherd, bringing the piece to a rest of "caressing beauty".
Recorded live during a Christmas concert at Southwark Cathedral by The Merbecke Choir, conducted by Emily Elias.
