Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to The Right Opinion, the home of a twat with too much free time, and in my existence on YouTube, I’ve spent my fair share of hours… and days, analysing people while providing thoughts and explanations on their behaviours. In fact, a lot of people have, that kind of content has become its own genre at this point.
There was a time when people would just do shit on YouTube, no matter how viral or eccentric and viewers would take it in, provide their reaction, and move on to whatever the next upload was, that initial reaction was enough stimulation, but times have changed. Now there is a market for those more allured by a deeper understanding in how humans operate and understanding what goes on beneath the surface, an interest in the psychological I suppose. The best targets of these sorts of analyses are always those that appear to defy logic more than others, whether that be through just the extremity of their irrationality or just through the heinousness of their actions. People are curious as to what the answers behind such behaviour are, whether that’s because they have a penchant for understanding people, they like to make sense of things, or they just enjoy a good story. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that nowadays, the “how” and the “why”, are just as important as the “what”.
It’s not like there’s a scarcity of potential video subjects on YouTube, but the interest isn’t restricted to this singular space. In fact, you’ll find plenty of content analysing celebrities, historical figures and the subjects at the centre of today’s video: true crime. I mean, where else are you going to find a hotbed of so many curious characters to take a closer look at than those fresh out of the slammer.
True crime has retained its reputation as one of the most influential genres on the platform with the increasing saturation of content, it’s sometimes hard to draw the line between those who actually pursue this subject out of actual desire to raise awareness and educate the viewers, and those who were just looking to cash in on tragedy, though in some cases, the signs are a little more… obvious.
Unfortunately, it seems that audience expectations were so low that honestly nothing about this sort of content is remotely shocking anymore, and it’s not like there’s much that can be done about them other than hope that eventually people will realise that what they’re watching is progressively decreasing their quality of life. It’s a shame because “true crime” is probably a genre deserving of some of the most sensitive hands, you’re dealing with cases that have consequences, not just for the victims, but also the accused. Being analytical is a necessity, looking at evidence, supporting, and against, thinking critically about it, trying to rationalise exactly what might have happened, and putting it all together in an effective story that entertains explanations without leaning too heavily into speculation. Although there were plenty of channels that definitely covered these elements, there was only really one slap bang in the middle of this intersection of “true crime” and “analytical” content: this was a channel by the name of JCS, also known as Jim Can’t Swim.
