Baltimore City seeks 16-year extension on sewage system overhaul deadline

Baltimore's ongoing struggle with sewage overflows has prompted city officials to request a 16-year extension on a federal consent decree aimed at updating the city's sewage system.
The decree, initially set to end in 2030, would now extend to 2046 if approved. Despite a major construction project completed four years ago, the city admits it has not effectively prevented sewage overflows.
"In essence, the goalposts have shifted. What we thought would achieve 100% now will only achieve 94%," Matthew Garbark, Director of the Department of Public Works, said.
