Jewel Quest is a "match 3" puzzle played on a grid filled with various tokens, such as diamonds, gold nuggets, coins, and skulls. The player may swap any two adjacent tiles, as long as the swap results in a horizontal or vertical line of three or more matching tokens. The matched set disappears, allowing tokens to drop into the gaps from above; if more matched sets form as a result, they disappear as well. Whenever tiles disappear, the background grid positions turn gold. The player must turn every square on the board to gold in order to complete the level. Failing to do so within the given time limit, or reaching a situation in which no more swaps are possible, costs one life and sends the player back to the start of that level. As the game progresses, new variations are introduced to make gameplay increasingly difficult: irregularly-shaped grids, squares in hard-to-reach places, tokens that must be matched multiple times to clear them from the board, etc. Jewel Quest has 180 levels and is set within the Mayan culture. There are 36 grids and they are played through, in succession, five times, with each play-through adding a new level of difficulty. During the first run-through, "Explorer," the player is given pieces of storyline in the form of "journal entries" to read after completing each grid, with an additional snippet before the beginning of each level. After playing the 36th grid, the totem "speaks" in addition to there being a written blurb. After the "Explorer" level, new information is given only at the end of the 36th level, and once after playing the 1-2 grid during the second run-through. All other "journal entries" are quotes or sayings to encourage the player. Likewise, if the player fails to complete a level within the time frame, encouraging quotes will be used.
Here are the differences for each rank/difficulty:
1. Explorer: A standard game mode with no additional mechanics.
2. Adventurer: Cursed masks are introduced. These masks remove gold spaces when matched by the player. If cursed masks align as part of a combo, they disappear without causing any negative effects and still award points.
3. Excavator: This mode includes cursed masks and silver squares. Matching gems turns normal squares into silver, and matching gems on top of a silver square turns it into gold.
4. Surveyor: Cursed masks and silver squares are removed, but additional jewel types are introduced on certain levels. This increases the likelihood of running out of moves, especially in levels 1-1 through 1-5, which contain seven jewel types. Levels 2-1 through 4-8 contain six jewel types, except for levels 3-3, 3-6, 3-7, 4-1, 4-3, and 4-8, which contain only five jewel types. Ironically, Surveyor difficulty becomes easier starting at level 5-1, as only five jewel types appear instead of six or seven jewel types. Additionally, from level 2-1 onward, levels may introduce buried gems if they previously had none, or significantly increase the number of buried gems or the number of matches required to clear them.
5. Researcher: This mode is similar to Surveyor, but cursed masks return. The number of jewel types is reduced compared to Surveyor levels that contain six or seven jewel types. As a result, some levels may be easier than in Surveyor difficulty if the player gets favorable cursed mask placements. Additionally, the option to skip ahead after losing a level three times in a row is no longer available.
These are the responses of Vacub Caquix's statue for each rank completion:
1. Explorer: "You’ve accomplished much, but you haven’t begun to taste the depths of my cleverness (mocking evil laugh)."
2. Adventurer: "You're a creature of many surprises, but this quest has only just begun.''
3. Excavator: "You're dashing, you're brilliant, you're toast (mocking evil laugh)."
4. Surveyor: "You've proven yourself worthy, but are you ready for the final challenge?"
5. Researcher: "The treasures of Xibalba are yours, my friend."
