"Miskwaagamiiwi Zaaga'iganing", "Red Lake Nation & Indian Reservation" covers 1,260.3 sq mi (3,264 km2 - 806,600 acres) in parts of nine counties, in Minnesota, United States. It is made up of numerous holdings, but, the largest section is an area around Red Lake, in north-central Minnesota, the largest lake in the state. This section lies primarily, in the counties of Beltrami and Clearwater. Land in seven other counties is also part of the reservation. The reservation population was 5,506 people, in the 2020 census. The tribe claims the land by right of conquest and Aboriginal title. They were not reassigned to it by the United States government. Seven principal clans (doodems) found on the Red Lake Indian Reservation are: makwa (bear), mikinaak (turtle), owaazisii (bullhead), nigig (otter), migizi (eagle), waabizheshi (marten), and ogiishkimanisii (kingfisher). As a population minority name, (sturgeon) and adik (caribou) clans are also found. The Ojibwe' migrated from the northern Great Lakes area to what is now Minnesota, during the 17th century. Warriors preceded the colonizers and ordered to clear the way for the Anishinaabe families who would be moving into the area. Ojibwe' warriors established a village just west of Duluth, known as Wi-yah-kwa-chi-ga-ming and later called Fond du Lac by French fur traders. These men were believed to be the first Europeans to interact with the Ojibwe' in that area. From there, the warriors pressed on to the Sandy Lake and Red Lake regions, sometime between the years of 1650 and 1750. Other Anishinaabe communities had already been established in what is now known as Grand Portage, Pembina and Rainy Lake, in Northern Minnesota.
