Step onto the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz in the Swiss Alps for a unique winter walking experience. In this POV video, we explore the "White Turf" village—a temporary city built entirely on ice—and take a sensory walk across the frozen lake 🇨🇭❄️.
🥶 WHY IS THE LAKE FROZEN? It might look terrifying to walk on a deep lake, but science makes it possible! St. Moritz sits at 1,800 meters (approx. 6,000 ft) in the Engadine valley.
The Science: Water is densest at 4°C. As the surface cools below this, the cold water stays at the top and eventually freezes.
The Conditions: The valley is known for "cold air pooling," creating a deep freeze.
Safety: The ice is rigorously tested. For heavy machinery and the event village to operate, the ice must be at least 27 cm (10.6 inches) thick. They even use ground-penetrating radar to ensure there are no air pockets!
🏇 WHAT ARE THE EVENTS ON THE ICE? Every February, the lake transforms into a world-class arena for:
White Turf: High-stakes horse racing on snow, including the exclusive "Skikjöring" where skiers are pulled by horses.
Snow Polo World Cup: The prestigious polo tournament played on the frozen surface.
The I.C.E. (International Concours of Elegance): Classic vintage cars driving on the frozen lake.
