Umberto Pelizzari (born 28 August 1965 in Busto Arsizio, in the province of Varese), Italy.
Champion apnea quintessential 1990s, Umberto Pelizzari sprayed very many world records. This global plurirecordman notably popularized the practice of yoga as a technique of preparation and concentration snorkeling. With a lung capacity of 7.9 liters, the Italian diver can remain in apnea for more than 7 minutes. Follower of relaxation therapy and yoga, as taught him Jacques Mayol, Umberto Pelizzari has mainly democratized the sport, including browsing the TV studios.
All through the 1990s Pelizzari became famous for his sportive rivalry with the time's other world top freediver, Cuban Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras, originally a close training friend around 1990.
In 1996, in Villasimius, he reaches a double world record September 9 in variable weight with -110 meters and the 16 the same month, with -131 meters he takes the record for no-limit Pipin .
On 13 September 1997 he again conquers the world record in constant weight with a depth of 75 meters, beating the Cuban Alessandro Ravelo (-73 meters). 20 September against the same Cuban competitor, Umberto wins the record in variable weight to 115 meters.
Pelizzari and Ferreras pushed each other deeper and deeper, and subsequently Pelizzari enhanced his measures to establish round markers in Constant Weight with -80 m (262 feet), and in No Limits with 150 m (492 feet), both these at the same event in October 1999.
Pelizzari was one of a handful of instigators behind the respected freediving organization AIDA which formed in 1994. Twice, in 1996 and 2001, Pelizzari became AIDA World Champion with the Italian national team. In 2001, Pelizzari concluded his athletic career with a Variable Weight record of -131 m (429 feet) and retired thereafter.
