After a worldwide plague wipes out plant life and decimates humanity, an apocalyptic New York City is the playground for bands of ravenous gangs. Under the leadership of Baron (Max von Sydow), one enclave of survivors develops a plague-resistant seed, but Baron realizes their commune will soon be overrun by the more savage neighbors. Deciding salvation lies outside the city, they hire the deadly warrior named Carson (Yul Brynner) to lead them out through the city’s subway tunnels. But it’s a route that soon becomes a tour of hell.
